When you undergo a minor surgical procedure in the Altruderm clinic you may be advised to use silicone gel to aid the healing process. Silicone has long been a well-established treatment modality for scars, including hypertrophic and keloid scars.
Silicone gel can be effective at minimising and flattening a range of scars, including surgical scars, therefore we recommend its use following surgical procedures such as cyst, lipoma or mole removal.
Treating the area with silicone gel can help to regulate the moisture levels and collagen production in the skin whilst the wound is healing, to help improve the appearance of the scar.
So, when and how should you use silicone gel post procedure?
- Never apply silicone gel to an open or wet wound. Only apply once the wound is closed and dry.
- Apply a thin layer of gel over the wound twice a day.
- The gel self-dries within 5 minutes forming a protective, hydrating barrier over the wound.
- You can apply suncream and cosmetics over the dried area.
Treatment should be continued for 3 months but can be for longer if improvement is still seen.
It is also recommended to massage your scar a few times a day for up to 10 mins.
You should keep your scar protected from the sun. This can help to encourage the scar to fade faster, reducing discolouration.
We will provide you with a Patient Information Leaflet on the benefits of silicone gel with your after-care pack before you leave the clinic.
